Hotdogging

Hotdogging is a non-penetrative sexual act in which the penis is placed in the cleft between a partner's buttocks and stimulated by sliding or thrusting along it. Reference cataloguing lists it as coitus interglutealis, with intergluteal sex, buttjob and assjob as recorded synonyms. It belongs to the same family as the thighjob and frot: the anatomy provides friction, and nothing is entered. What separates it from its neighbours is that it deliberately reproduces the motion of anal sex while remaining external, which is most of the reason people choose it.

Definition & scope

The defining feature is the site: the gluteal cleft, approached from behind or with the receiving partner lying face down, usually with lubricant. The act is orientation-neutral and appears in the same repertoires as the other outercourse practices catalogued under non-penetrative sex. Descriptions in other-language reference works note that it may end there or transition into penetrative sex, which is the reason it is so often described as foreplay rather than as an act in its own right.

Examples

What the term covers. Sliding contact along the cleft as a complete act; the same act as a prelude that may or may not become penetrative; its use as a deliberate substitute where anal penetration is unwanted, painful or being approached gradually; and its appearance as a discrete adult-media category, which is where most English speakers first meet the word.

What the term does not cover. Anal play involves entry, which this specifically does not. Frot is penis-to-penis contact and thighjob uses the closed thighs, both cousins of this practice rather than versions of it. A butt fetish is an attraction to buttocks rather than an act, and face-sitting shares the anatomy but nothing else. Frotteurism, rubbing against a person who has not consented, is not a variant of this or any other consensual practice.

How the word is used. It is vernacular and unstable across languages: English has hotdogging, buttjob and assjob, Japanese shiri koki (尻コキ), Polish natelizm, and Spanish-language reference works describe it descriptively rather than with a slang term. The Latinate coitus interglutealis is a cataloguing coinage, not clinical usage; the act appears in neither DSM-5-TR nor ICD-11, and no survey instrument names it. A reader will find it in porn taxonomies and in structured data long before finding it in a textbook.

History & origins

A practice older than its documentation

The act itself is presumably as old as any other form of external friction, and it leaves almost no historical trace, for a reason worth stating plainly: acts that are treated as foreplay rather than as sex are rarely named, and what is not named is not recorded. The nearest well-documented parallel is intercrural sex, which survives in the historical record only because ancient Greek writers, Zulu custom and modern epidemiologists each had a reason to name it. Intergluteal contact had no equivalent advocate.

The modern vocabulary

The English words are recent and pornographic in provenance. Hotdogging, an obvious visual metaphor, and the -job compounds buttjob and assjob circulate in adult-media tagging rather than in dictionaries of record; the practice's entry into structured reference is largely a Wikidata and non-English-Wikipedia phenomenon, with articles in the Spanish, Japanese and Polish editions and none in English. That asymmetry is itself informative: this is a common act with a thin documentary record, and any prevalence claim about it should be read in that light.

In practice

Lubricant is the only common requirement, and the practical considerations are ordinary ones: friction on dry skin causes abrasion, and the perianal skin is thinner than the surrounding surface. Because the act sits immediately adjacent to penetration, it is frequently used as a negotiated boundary: an agreed stopping point, or a step in gradually approaching something else. Where that is the arrangement, the value of the practice depends entirely on the boundary being respected, which makes explicit consent less a formality here than in most acts.

Prevalence & culture

No general-population survey measures it, and the estimate here is inferred rather than observed: the act requires nothing, appears across orientations, and is described in reference works as a standard element of foreplay, which together suggest something in the low single digits to low teens of adults as a regular practice and considerably more as an occasional one. Its visibility in adult media substantially exceeds its documentation everywhere else, a pattern shared with the titjob and for the same reason: it films clearly.

Safety, consent & law

Between consenting adults it is lawful and among the lower-risk sexual acts, though not risk-free. Skin-to-skin contact transmits herpes, HPV and pubic lice; semen deposited near the anus or, in some positions, near the vaginal opening carries a small pregnancy and infection risk; and unlubricated friction causes abrasions that make transmission likelier. The one consideration specific to this act is the ease with which it becomes penetrative by accident or by drift, which is why partners who use it as a boundary should agree on that boundary in advance rather than mid-act.
