Roleplay turns a fantasy into a scene: a teacher and student, a doctor and patient, a tense interrogation or a kidnap scenario. This collection gathers the most popular roleplay archetypes and the uniforms, costumes and settings that stage them.

17Roleplay turns a fantasy into a scene with parts to play, and the 17 entries here are the parts people play most: the teacher and the student, the doctor and the patient, the boss and the assistant, the captor and the captive, and the uniforms, costumes and rooms that stage them. Roleplay itself is the sixth most documented interest in the catalog, at an estimated 30 percent of adults, and the scenarios beneath it are what that 30 percent is made of.
Most of the members are filed under Power, Roles and Scenarios, which is the family for interests defined by a dynamic rather than an act. A scenario is a dynamic with a setting: the authority gap of the classroom or the clinic, the transgression of the office or the family, the confinement of the kidnap. The collection is arranged that way, by what the scene borrows.
Authority scenarios first, because they are the common ones. Teacher roleplay, doctor and nurse roleplay and boss and secretary roleplay all rank in the top 75, each with an estimated 6 to 12 percent of adults, and the FAQ below takes the question of why these three recur: each supplies a ready-made gap in rank that the scene can use without inventing one. Office sex fantasy and medical setting kink are the settings on their own, the room without the roles.
Transgression scenarios second. Incest fantasy, at an estimated 8 percent, is a taboo theme played by unrelated adults, and the entry and the FAQ both say what the survey literature says about the distance between a fantasy and a wish. Nun fetish borrows religious dress for the same reason. Confinement third: kidnapping roleplay, captor and captive and interrogation play are the consensual non-consent scenarios, negotiated in advance, and chremastistophilia, arousal at being robbed, is the rare clinical cousin at the foot of the list.
The costumes are the fourth strand: uniform fetish at rank 55, schoolgirl uniform fetish, the maid, and cosplay, which is a costume with a character attached and appears in the fandom collection too.
Race play is in the collection and is marked on its page as among the most contested practices in BDSM, because its material is real difference and real slurs rather than an invented rank. The catalog files it, describes the objections, and does not resolve them; the FAQ below says why it is singled out.
The medical scenarios cross into Medical and clinical play, where the instruments and the sensation practices live; here only the roles and the room are listed. The kidnap and captivity scenarios cross into BDSM under consensual non-consent, which is the dynamic they stage.
One entry is ultra-common, three are very common and eight are common, which makes this the most widely reported collection after BDSM. Roleplay at 30 percent, boss and secretary at 12, teacher and incest fantasy at 8: the top of the list is ordinary. The tail is short, four uncommon and one rare. A scenario, unlike a material or a body part, needs nothing but two people and an agreement, and the numbers show it.
No, and the structure of the scene is the evidence. Kidnapping roleplay and captor and captive scripts are arranged in advance by the person who will be restrained, who keeps a stop signal throughout. The fantasy is of surrendering control while in fact holding it, which is the reverse of what an actual abduction offers.
Each supplies an authority gap and a script that needs no explanation. Everyone already knows how a lesson, a consultation or an appraisal is supposed to run, so teacher, doctor and nurse and boss and secretary scenes can begin mid-situation. The asymmetry does work that would otherwise take an hour of setup between two people.
Four things, usually: who each person is playing, how far the fiction is allowed to run, a word or gesture that stops it, and what happens once it ends. Roleplay is unusual in that a partner may stay in character while genuinely distressed, so an out-of-character signal matters more here than a general sense of trust does.
It is not read that way. The charge in an incest fantasy comes from the taboo itself, which is a different mechanism from attraction to a particular person: the scenario is arousing because it is forbidden. When it is enacted at all, it is enacted between unrelated adults borrowing family roles, much as any other roleplay borrows a costume.
Mostly it is a hobby. Cosplay appears here only in its erotic form, where the costume or the character is itself the source of arousal rather than the craft of building it. The distinction matters at conventions, where the great majority of participants intend nothing sexual, and where the maid outfit and the costume are not the same object.
Because consent does not settle the argument. Race play stages racial power inside a scene, and practitioners describe reclaiming or defusing a charge that exists whether or not anyone plays with it. Critics hold that rehearsing those dynamics erotically reinforces them regardless of intent. It is documented here because it occurs, not because the disagreement has been resolved.
