Garment fetishism sits between the material categories and the role-based ones: the object is clothing, but its meaning often comes from the body it dresses or the role it signals. It ranges from footwear and hosiery (shoes, boots, heels, stockings, pantyhose) through intimate apparel and foundation garments to uniforms and other role-coded dress.

Is the attraction to the garment or to the person wearing it?
Both patterns exist, and the difference matters in practice. Some interests attach to the object itself, so a shoe or a pair of panties holds its charge with nobody in them, and worn items are often kept or traded. Others require an occupied garment: endytophilia is defined by needing a partner clothed rather than naked, which is the exact inverse.
When does liking how something looks become a fetish?
Aesthetic preference here is close to universal, which is why lingerie and high heels sit at the top of this family. Clinicians draw the line at necessity and distress: the interest is a fetish when the garment becomes a reliable requirement for arousal, and a disorder only when that requirement causes real impairment or harm to someone.
Why do uniforms recur so often?
A uniform does the work of an entire scenario in one image. It announces authority or service, subtracts individuality, and arrives with a script both people already know, which is why uniform fetishism slides so easily into roleplay. The recurring costumes, the maid, the nun, the schoolgirl, are heavily coded rather than merely well cut.
Is wearing the garment yourself a different interest?
It is usually treated as one. Attraction directed outward at what a partner wears is distinct from arousal at one's own appearance in a particular garment, which is where homeovestism sits: dressing in clothing of one's own gender for the charge of the role it signals. The same corset or pair of gloves can serve either direction.
Is a latex catsuit a clothing fetish or a material fetish?
It depends on what could be substituted. If a cotton version of the same garment would still work, the interest is in cut and coverage, which is where full-body zentai suits sit.
