Foot fetishism is the most commonly reported fetish, and it rarely stops at the foot. This collection gathers attraction to feet, toes and legs alongside the footwear and hosiery (shoes, heels, boots, socks and stockings), and the acts that travel with them, from tickling and foot-whipping to the footjob.

40Feet are the most commonly reported fetish in every study that has counted, and this collection exists because the interest rarely stops at the foot. Foot fetish itself ranks fifth of 486 entries, the highest-placed fetish in the strict sense on the whole index, at an estimated 14 percent of adults. The 29 entries around it are what the interest becomes when it moves: to the toes, the soles and the arch; to the shoes, boots, socks and stockings that cover the foot; and to the acts that use it, from worship to the footjob.
The clinical name is podophilia, and the older manuals filed it under partialism, an erotic focus on a body part other than the genitals. The DSM-5-TR folds partialism into fetishistic disorder, diagnosable only with distress or impairment, and the entries here describe the interest in its ordinary form, which the surveys say is very common and the manuals say is not a disorder.
In Scorolli and colleagues' 2007 study of 381 online fetish groups, feet were 47 percent of all body-part preferences, and footwear was among the largest object categories. Lehmiller's 2018 survey of 4,175 American adults put interest in feet at roughly one adult in seven. No other partialism comes close: leg fetish sits at rank 119 and thigh fetish at 202, both filed here because the leg is where a foot interest travels next.
The literature has offered explanations and proved none of them. The neurologist V. S. Ramachandran proposed in 1998 that the foot and the genitals sit beside each other on the brain's sensory map, and a 2013 body-mapping study by Turnbull and colleagues found no such clustering. The foot fetish entry carries both, and its history section runs from Philostratus to foot binding, because the interest is old enough to have a history and common enough to have a literature.
The catalog files the foot in pieces because people search for it in pieces. Toe fetish, sole fetish, arch fetish and barefoot fetish each name a narrower focus than the whole foot, and each ranks in the top hundred. Foot odor fetish is the scent form, a foot-specific facet of olfactophilia. These are the entries a reader lands on from a specific query, and the reason the collection is long rather than one page.
The acts have their own entries because an act is what a person does, and a fetish is what they respond to. Foot worship, toe sucking and sole licking are reverent; the footjob and toejob are partnered stimulation; tickling, trampling and bastinado are sensation, and the last two sit in the BDSM collection as well, because a foot on a chest or a cane on a sole is power exchange whichever collection files it. Foot domination is the dynamic itself, the foot as the instrument of control.
Eleven of the 29 entries are garments, and they are the bridge to two other collections. Shoe fetish, clinically retifism after the eighteenth-century writer Rétif de la Bretonne, ranks 38th and is the highest object fetish in the group; high heel fetish and boot fetish narrow it by style, and shoeplay, the dangling and dipping of a shoe half off, is the one that is watched rather than worn. Ballet boot fetish takes the heel to its limit, the foot held fully en pointe inside the boot. Stocking fetish, pantyhose fetish, sock fetish and nylon fetish are the hosiery, with seamed stocking fetish as the narrowest focus of all, the line up the back of the leg, shared with Lingerie and underwear where the garment rather than the foot is the point. Bootblacking, the ritual shining of leather, belongs to the gay leather tradition and appears in the BDSM collection under service.
The collection is unusually even. One entry is very common, eighteen are common, an estimated 2 to 8 percent each, nine are uncommon, and one, foot fisting, is rare and carries a risk note. Almost nothing here is obscure: a foot interest that has a name has, by the catalog's measure, at least one adult in fifty reporting it. That evenness is itself the shape of the most common fetish. The whole of it is common, and the parts are common too.
There is no settled answer. The usual explanation is learned association, in which a body part repeatedly present during arousal acquires the charge itself. A neurological conjecture, that foot and genital regions sit adjacent on the brain's sensory map, is widely quoted but remains unproven. Cultural eroticisation of bare feet and soles long predates either account.
They overlap heavily without being identical. An interest in shoes, heels or boots can be entirely about the object: its shape, sound, material and the way it is worn, with an empty shoe still holding the charge. Hosiery such as stockings works the same way. A foot interest survives the removal of all of it.
No, though one common framing makes it look that way. Foot worship and foot domination place the feet above the person attending to them, and trampling makes the hierarchy literal. Much of the interest carries no hierarchy at all: a footjob is simply an act, and admiration of legs or arches is aesthetic rather than positional.
The interest divides on precisely this point. One side prefers feet clean, groomed and pedicured; the other is drawn specifically to scent, catalogued here as foot odour. Care matters either way, since licking and other oral contact carries the ordinary risks of skin bacteria, and cuts, calluses or athlete's foot are good reasons to wait.
They travel with it without being the same thing. Tickling targets the sole because it is the most sensitive surface available, and the appeal is helpless reaction rather than the foot as such. Bastinado, striking the soles, belongs to impact play and carries genuine injury risk, since the foot has little padding over bone.
